never mind-- i've got it working now. if they aren't mdi forms, i load the secondary form (wo/ showing it) at the main form load event. when called for, the secondary form is sized and positioned where it should go. At the end of the main form's execution, i unload the secondary. simple enough, but too much for my mind on cold medicine...
