You can use ShellExecute to not shell DOS window. We used it in my older job.
You can also automate WinZip using Rick Borup's class from Downloads section here.
Dynazip I used in my other job too with Mark McCasland's wrapper.
But anyway, the referenced thread discusses a lot of possible solutions. I'm wondering if we have WiKi page with all utilities listed?
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
