ON SHUTDOWN CLEAR EVENTS does not work because when you issue that command you are overriding the native ON SHUTDOWN behavior with CLEAR EVENTS. When you issue ON SHUTDOWN with no other arguments, you return the ON SHUTDOWN to its native behavior, thus allowing you to shut down Visual FoxPro.
