Yes I was aware, esp. as, after the prog had run, I tried to open the txt file with Notepad, to check the text was in it, and was told that another process had it open :-)

So, yes, it's naughty not closing the file but I didn't think necessarily that this would prevent the text being written to it, esp. as, like I said, I've seen it work under 3 different methods.

But still don't see how that's germane to the joke. But I can be obtuse at times.

UPDATE:

The same system was installed on two further machines (older than the one with the problem) and the text file was created and populated OK. I'm pleased to say this as in talking to the client it makes the problem out to be (in their eyes) not one of my incompetence but one of the old software vs new hardware. :-)
