>Somebody has got to explain this stuff to me. I did not grow up with soccer, so when I see something like this, I'm unsure what makes it great. He kicked it a fairly long way, but in the final analysis, all he did was take a pass and kick it at the goal. It went in.

>I compare this to hockey where a player shoots the puck from the blue line and it goes into the goal. I don't see that as anything particularly terrific, so I'm really not sure what makes this sort of goal in soccer different.
I was both hockey and soccer fan in my younger age so probably I can help you. If a very long shot in hockey is ended by a goal, it means either goalie mistake or lucky break. In soccer really great long shot can still result in goal without the abovementioned factors. Also, in hockey most goals come from very short range, in soccer getting to the same range is usually not required. 10 meters shot in soccer means goal in most cases, 10 meters in hockey means the opposite.
PS: I didn't watch the episode.
