Its less common now in France. Your see a lot of signs saying Vous n'avez pas priorite.
Still can catch you in towns sometimes.

What are the rules on the crossings for pedestrians. Do you have to give way.

>>Here traffic on the roundabout has priority as well. So if your joining it you check for traffic and then pull out.
>>The priority on the right used to be on the continent and used to cause Brits to have accidents as it meant that you could be on the main road and traffic joining from the right had priority taking us completely by surprise if we weren't paying attention.
>>Here if the roundabout gets full people usually behave fairly sensibly and leave a gap so other drivers can get round.

>>Those changes in law can make for interesting driving. I remember early one morning chasing a friend on motorbikes through the Compiegne forest in France trying to make him realise he had set off on the wrong side of the road.

>>>We have roundabouts here and more are added every year. Don't you have the rule that the driver on the right has the rightaway (which keeps traffic moving into the roundabout)? Here, that is generally not the case. The person merging INTO traffic from the right must yield so there is often congestion on roudabouts because people not accustomed to them stop and wait for a clear opening. Also, since the driver already on the roudabout doesn't have to yield, they just keep going and often do not make room for someone attempting to pull in.

I sometimes marvel at what a good idea they are, and how they keep the traffic moving, instead of those interminable start-stop-start-stop cross-roads with traffic lights that you seem happy to endure.
