My favorite part of that story was the Lord granting him an extension (LOL). He hadn't raised the money by the declared date and then announced the Lord had spoken to him again and said he had a while longer to dig up the dough.

I also like the irony of a high profile televangelist with predictable views about homosexuality being named Oral Roberts.

>And let us not forget Oral Robers needing $8 Million or God would kill him.
>
>>Since most of the quotes are mine, not Hilmar's, I feel they merit a response from me.
>>
>>>>> Movie stars get their money thrown at them - you don't buy their wares, you don't even hear from them.
>>>
>>>Oh really? And where does this money come from that is thrown at them? Does it fall out of the sky? Or is it wrenched from our pockets at the theatre box office?
>>
>>But it's not the movie stars that do the wrenching, it's the movie industry. It takes the money out of your pocket and throws (some of) it at their stars - but they don't do it out of goodness of their heart, but as an investment.

>>>>> Musicians at least produce something that may even sound good.
>>>
>>>Have you heard some really great gospel and/or praise music at your local church? Oh, and, by the way. Attendence is free.
>>
>>Have you heard some really good partisan songs from WWII and the Spanish Civil War? When was the last time you heard a good rendition of The International?
>>
>>I don't have a local church, or any church, you could have guessed. And I prefer music written without constraints.
>>
>>>>> But these are all professionals who at least have a product which you can use for something. And even politicians can sometimes be forced into doing some good. My list is just con men.
>>>
>>>I listed all these professions only to illustrate that everyone needs money to survive. It's only Christians, it seems, who are bashed for attempting to get some.
>>
>>Nope, I don't mind anyone making an honest buck, present company included. A honest day's work should be honestly paid. But I do dislike con men. You may admire their skills sometimes, but they remain cons.
>>
>>>I can't speak for Falwell, only because I don't really know a whole lot about the man. But as for Roberstson .... If you really wan't to know the true nature and character of this man, do yourself a favor and research his 'Operation Blessing' organization. What this one organization has done in a consistant manner over the last few decades for the poor and down-trodden, is nothing less than mind-boggling. You will never speak evil of Robertson again.

>>
>>So at least not some of the money goes out to do some good, and gives him some good PR along the way. Why doesn't he do that anonymously?
>>
>>I have the misfortune to live in the city where he operates. I felt the same shame as I did when Iran's ambassador in Belgrade issued the fatwa on Salman Rushdie: you moron, why in my country? In Robertson's case, it was his call for "taking Hugo Chavez out". It's simply not done in civilized world, to call for an assassination of a democratically elected president of a foreign country, period.
>>
>>And I was lucky not to have moved into town when he predicted that hurricanes will wreak havoc in some cities as god's punishment over the sinners (gamblers et al - don't remember which cities he mentioned, Miami perhaps), and then the hurricane hit Virginia Beach.
>>
>>>Sure he has some rough edges and says some dumb things, but so do we all.
>>
>>So if a mullah somewhere in Muslim world calls for assassination of GWB, it's just dumb, but no more than a rough edge?
