Yes I'm absolutely sure it was Ubuntu. After booting the CD I saw no such icon to install to the hard disk. Maybe I should check into a newer version? I don't remember what version I tried, but it was the one that was available at the time Tommy mentioned it (several months ago?).

I remember having to go to a command window and typing something to try to get it onto the hard disk! And this was after having to read it in a forum on their web site. I couldn't find it anywhere in a readme or help file.

And yes, once you boot from the CD it also puts an icon in your desktop for you to click if you want to install it to the hard disk permanentely.
