In your list of fields, make sure the state fields is actually selected. To be sure, physically select the field in the list, then enter the default value.

>Thanks for all your help everybody. I used to be a heavy-duty machine language programmer for a bunch of years writing mainframe system software, and had alot fewer problems than this VFP gives me. But I am not afraid of it, just a little frustrated and impatient at times. I guess I'm just having one of those days when nothing works.
