FWIW, I've been saying since 2002 that VFP people might consider getting aboard the project-planning or design train: just this week I received a very nice "thank you" from a woman with whom I have no memory of ever speaking here on UT but who apparently read my advice, followed it up, and is now doing really well in a secure project planning job. Had she spent her weekends learning NET, would she have been as happy? Who can say. Nice story, glad you were able to help. I get involved in design with clients because at least half the time they lack the in-house resources to effectively do it. My father was an IBM and EDS-er for most of his adult life, so I know the value of that.
I've spent time with someone who needed to learn .NET, and the person is doing well, with a big salary boost. Had the person decided to go in a different direction (like building the next great QuickBook app), would the person be doing as well? Who can say. <s>
