We have chosen Python with the Dabo framework. We in fact have our first paying job using Python. So we are not waiting. Of course we will keep our current VFP apps going but for anything new we will try to use python.
Like you we see Linux as growing market share even in the US. But most important to us was that fact python reads like VFP and the Dabo framework reminds us of VFP thinking. And of course python runs on Windows, Linux, and the Mac.
The Cons: The lack of good and complete visual tools to create GUI's. Dabo has 'ClassDesigner' but it will work for only straight forward forms. Therefore, currently we are coding the forms by hand (not as hard as it sounds). Not a lot of how to's for the Dabo framework. Dabo currently lacks a web solution.
The Pros: Python is very powerful. Libraries for almost anything you might need (and then some). The community I think is bigger than VFP's. Lot's of help. Dabo supports many backends including Ms-SQL and Postgres (which is what we are using). Dabo is client/server. Therefore, we don't need a web browser solution.
We believe Python to be the best choice but I have to say Java came in second.
IMHO Victor you are following the correct path.
