It's "brolly" for umbrella. I rarely say that - probably a word from the Raj in India. I think you'll find that back in the days of horse-drawn carriages you guys referred to the "boot" too. As for torch, well mine doesn't flash at all, unless I quickly turn it on and off repeatedly, whcih I don't think is the primary purpose of it.

BTW we still call telephone poles "telegraph poles".
