Many moons ago when I was around 20 or so, a friend had some of her friends visiting from New York. We were sitting in her living room, and one of her friends, a guy named Bobby was messing around with some gadget or other (I don't really remember what it was), and he turned to me and asked, "Have you got a ployah". At first I had no idea what he was talking about. It took a couple of minutes before I figured out he wanted a pair of pliers. He insisted that there was only one, so it wasn't a pair.
