So the steward(esse)s were in charge of, well, stewardship of the flight. Now they are replaced with "flight attendants", who are not supposed to do anything, just attend the flight. Sort of a "just be there" job. Well, now that you don't even get peanuts or coffee or anything if the flight is shorter than about two hours, the expression has become correct.

Did you notice that nobody's in charge of doing anything at Walmart? There are no workers, only associates. I.e. members of a society. They just go there and make each other company.
