You are incredibly naive on this point. Credit card theft and identity theft in general are huge and growing problems. I have not been victimized personally (knocking wood) but know people who have. It is a financial nightmare you wouldn't believe.

Just as a point of information, the pros who do this kind of stuff strike fast and hard. By the time you get your next credit card statement they have long since let off your card and moved on to others. The name of the game is to get in and out fast.
