MSDE/SQL Express can handle the database needs for an awful lot of small/medium business needs with reliability and security that VFP tables can not match. Free.

Interface that with most any modern development platform (VFP/.NET/Java/you name it).

Scale to larger databases (that VFP could never handle natively) transparently.

The argument about DBFs being a major cause of VFP's demise or lack of MS sale-ability really doesn't hold much water.
