Yes, we do use VFP to read HL7 messages, either through direct TCP/IP messages (winsock control) or text files.

You can just read the files line by line and interpretate them. We have written a piece of software that reads all segments of a message and processes the info in there.

I don't think you should go through the XML adapter unless you're talking about the HL7 3.0 format, which to my knowledge is still experimental
