Public perception is a product of the media - American and Turkish. I have worked with the Turkish government. Cooperation is very good, the Turkish officer class is first rate and there is a lot of respect and cooperation. We do not always have exactly the same interests - that is not unusual with friends - but the United States is very committed to the long-term success of the Turkish Republic and recognizes how important that success is for the future of the Middle East.

The current Turkish government is probably not our favorite and the current American government is probably not your favorite but our long term relationship will continue to be very strong.

U.S. anti-terrorism advisors have definitely worked with Turkey on the issue of the PKK - on both sides of the border.

( and most of what the US really does about Al Quaida and the Taliban is done quietly - with the help and co-operation of good friends like Turkey )

>>Public perception is wrong Metin. I can tell you I know for sure that the U.S. is doing a lot in regards to the PKK, but it is all done quietly, behind the scenes using special units. Look at Charles' posts to get a better idea...

>How you can know that? Are you a CIA agent? :)

>When issue is EL Kaida or Taliban why your special forces don't act so quietly... :)

>Our government don't think like you... If USA helps us for PKK, why our government think like that?

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
