In a perfect world, you would be right. However, this is not a perfect world and your viewpoint is if anything naive. It is precisely that view (let's be nice to everyone and they will be nice to us or let's leave everyone alone and they will leave us alone) which gets countries into trouble. No country likes the U.S. to interfere with their country, but few countries hesitate to ask for the military might of the U.S. when diplomacy and peace fail. It is because of history that no country is allowed to have nuclear weapons except a select few. The United States, Russia (former Soviet Union), United Kingdom, France and China, are the only countries allowed to have nuclear weapons according to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) from 1970. All members of the United Nations except Israel, India and Pakistan have signed the NPT.
