I've known both of these guys for a while. We don't hang out (they're just kids <g> ) , but we've more than howdy'd an' shook. Both of them are brilliant - and I don't think of a lot of people as brilliant. Both have egos even bigger than mine - and there are even fewer people I'd give that award to. I've enjoyed more than a few evenings in wide-ranging discussions with each of them, sober and otherwise. And I was quite surprised by the level of vitriol they displayed here ( not the vitriol, just the display )

That being said, I'm also amazed at some of the other folks here that I don't know personally but who seem pretty intelligent and generally kind and generous with their knowledge who get into major geek slapfests. Just seems odd. Obviously the subtext goes beyond SPs, .NET, foxisdeadnoitsnot, or the correct pronunciation of the Klingon death song.

Oh well.

Makes me glad I have neither expertise in technical matters - or the need to make such expertise a zero sum game.

>>>>>>>>I don't care that somebody has different opinions than me... I just can't stand when people take the "My way is better than your's" approach while including phrases like ".NET folks up here don't get it". Not everybody needs change tracking or NULL dates or a local database engine.

>>>>>>>No, you're right. Not everyone needs it. And that is fine, but then please don't tell everyone that every VFP application can be easily written in .NET. And that is what the message is from the .NET side. Again, you're limiting your options by restricting yourself to a limited technology.

>>>>>>I may be the only one, but I miss the old JVP vs. Walter smackdowns. Maybe he would make an appearance if we say his name enough times. JVP, JVP, JVP...

>>>Steve must have been before my time here. I tried to member-search for him, but couldn't find him.

>>He was never on the UT as far as I know. He was very active on the Compuserve FoxForum and then started the FoxPro Wiki (http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Wiki~FoxProWiki), where he remains active. If you ever get the chance to meet him at a conference or wherever, just say hi and listen as hard as you can. It's like drinking water from a fire hose.

>I had a number of exchanges with Steve on the UT. It got to the point that when JVP posted something that sooner or later Steve would jump all over him and the exchanges got very bad. It seems that JVP and Steve got kicked off of the UT.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
