Presently reading Anna Karenina in Russian, I discover that the noble writer says "otvorit'", just like we say, and when I was learning the language it was already "otkrit'", and whoever said "otvorit'" was chided. Reading Tolstoy surely won't get me updated on the language :).

It is still used and I think Tolstoy's language is modern enough and rich enough.
