As I said, there are some real advantages here. But why not further improve?! As an example, the way you snipped is not only focussing on a part of the previous message, but also diverting attention from other parts of it and perhaps even actually redefining what's the core of the topic. The advantage is that one item gets more attention and depth, the disadvantage is that other items no longer get attention (unless someone else elaborates on the other items in separate subthreads). Eventually such other items do not deserve further focus, but that's only eventually.
