A few years ago I taught IT in a secretarial school, where they conformed to the latest Pitmans standards/conventions. In these, etc, eg, ie, Inc, Re (et al) do not have the abbreviation full-stops), so the above Q is solved. :-)
Hmm, there's not yet such a convention in Dutch, as to my knowledge. I try to prevent trouble by reconstructing the sentence or by not abbreviating there.
