>My doctor gave me some samples of Axert (almotriptan malate) a couple of months ago to try. Surprisingly, my migraines stopped right around that time so I haven't had the need to try it yet. I carry a sample around in my purse though just in case. If one comes on, I will not hesitate to give it a try (either that or find someplace in the dark to hide for a few hours).

The trick with triptans is to learn your pre-migraine symptoms and take them when you know you have one coming on. They are not so much pain-killers as pain preventers. If you take them when the pain is already pronounced they work a lot more slowly to give you relief. But if you take them pre-emptively when you start getting the nausea or visual weirdness or whatever your cues are they will pretty much stop it dead.

>>Around our house Fiorunal was considered like aspirin - fine if you really didn't have much pain but otherwise useless. I could take a handful of them and wash them down with Tylenol 3 ( with codeine ) and they wouldn't even take the edge off. But taking a zomig when the symptoms started ( for me a burning sensation in my neck ) would short circuit the pain entirely. Still got some other symptoms as the migraine ran its course, but I could be functional.

>>Thanks to some diet and lifestyle changes I have taken about 5 zomig in the last year ( as opposed to the dozen a month I was doing at one point )

>>>Interesting topic. I used to get migraines starting when I was 9 and didn't stop having them until I was about 20. They were terrifying as a kid because I knew of the unbearable pain and inevitable "hurling in the can" that would soon follow, and that would last for about 8-12 hours. My mother discovered Fiorinal from her Doctor and I found that if I would take one of those right after seeing those nasty "spots and halos", I would only have a really bad headache for about 2 hours. That was like manna from heaven. But I had no idea that Fiorinal was actually a narcotic until years after I quit have the migraines. Since we never took it except when we had the migraine, there was no addiction or abuse. (For that, we did crack. LOTS of it.) totally kidding.
>>>
>>>It's been over a decade later now, and just recently I have been having been having periods where all of the sudden I start seeing the spots. Freaks me out, but no headache. Makes me wonder if they are trying to come back. I went to my doctor and he gave me a couple of samples of Maxalt & Frova (triptans I guess you are referring to), just in case the Migraines do return.
>>>
>>>Migraines to me are like HELL I mean really HELL. I would prefer to just be shot in the head with a 50 cal. than to go there again. Getting older, it's SO much fun.

>>>>My wife and I both have had them all our lives and are amused by people who say "Oh, yes, I get terrible headaches. Sometimes I have to take 2 aspirin ! " With a real migraine you can take enough codeine that they could amputate your foot without your noticing and still feel unbearable headache pain.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
