I think there are still a lot of video driver issues between various hardware makers and Vista.
My laptop (Dell 9400) handles multiple monitors great running Vista Ultimate (an upgrade from XP). I have 2 desks with very different 2nd monitors (and one desk has the 2nd monitor on the left and one has it on the right (workspace layout dictates that)) and I use the laptop standalone as well, and it always detects the correct monitors and positions them properly. For whatever reason it takes about 10 seconds for it to actually get the viseo working properly, but it gets the job done. I've seen other laptops that were lucky to remember their built-in panel settings after installing Vista.
