Thanks for your quick translations. They do help but just a little. As a matter of fact when putting everything together there remain around 4 basic questions in this method:

1. how should I do this registry lookup and changement programaticaly (VFP or perhaps in VB?) ( o.w. this is a NoGo since how on earth should I be able to tell my users to do this ? Must not think of all the mistakes they could possibly make in the registry!)
Do you have somewhere in your library a routine to update / change registry settings?
If so please, please let me in.
2. The number "27" he finds in which registry value?
3. What indicates the found "731" -> this seems to be the final value he was looking for
4. Now to change the Vid and Mode values in which registry entree?. I presume you shall have to change in case you want thumbnails the value of Vid to "{8BEBB290-52D0-11D0-B7F4-00C04FD706EC}" and Mode should be "0x5" (read the first 1. and 2. in his original message)

I will now 1st backup my registry and will start experimenting. In case I find a final need solution, I will report back to you.
