Probably something like a Treo (the Windows version, not the Palm version), or one of the various PDA-style phones, or the Motorola Q. Someone mentioned the new 6800 Mogul - that looks like it's going to be a pretty slick phone. In either case, he can use software like PDANet to use it as a modem. One thing to be aware of - even though some phone plans give you "unlimited" data access on the phone, as soon as you start using it as a link for a computer, they want you to also have the normal data plan (some will hit you with major charges if they determine that you're doing this w/o having the plan).
