Let's say he's parked in his car somewhere with his laptop and wants to get online with it and there is not hotspot around. He can hook up the phone to his laptop and use the phone's EVDO connection (like a modem).

>Why the need for a modem if it comes with wireless onboard?

>>I have a Sprint PPC 6700, and now they have the PPC6800 out. (I think Sprint calls it the Mongul). Its by far the best PDA/Cellphone you can get over here in the USA and if you use the internet and such Sprint has the best deals for their rates too. The unit does have an excellent slide out keyboard. It does NOT have GPS, however it does have built in WiFi and bluetooth 2.0. With the BlueTooth you can get a cheap bluetooth GPS gizmo easily for under 80 bucks and less than 50 if you hunt around online for one.
>>In addition - you can use the thing as a modem too. (teathering). With Sprints EVDO connection its pretty darn fast too - and the new Mongul unit is going to run EVDO-Revision A - which is even faster.
>>I've had my 6700 for over a year and I have 3 friends that have had theirs for about the same amount of time, thus far all of us are quite happy with them and the few people I've talked to that have the new 6800 Mongul are saying nothing but good stuff about them.

>>>Speaking of phones, my oldest son has been calling me every day for a week, yakking my ear off asking about what kind of phone he should get. How the heck should I know?!? He said "Well, you're a geek and you know geeky stuff, so you should know about this. And even if you personally don't, you have lots of other geeky friends who might know". So, I guess I'm looking for recommendations. <g>
>>>
>>>He needs this for his work. He's a P.I. He takes his notebook computer with him in the car and he's usually got stuff loaded up on Streets & Trips, for where he has to go that day. He'd love to be able to have a phone with GPS that would be able to use his Streets & Trips software easily (upload his current maps to the phone from the computer ... I suppose that's not totally necessary, but it would be nice) ... he definitely needs the GPS though. Also, he wants to be able to use the phone as a wireless access point for his computer. The phone should also have keyboard input, not touch screen (yuck to the iPhone).

>>>Anyone have any recommendations so I can get him off my back? <g>
