>So Alex, since you said there's no need for additional legislation, I'm curious, what would you do with the supposed 12+ million undocumented people? (I said 'supposed' because I think there are a few more)First you have a more pressing problem. I read that there are close to 600k that already have deportation orders outstanding but nobody's looking for them. Fund law enforcement. Look for the criminal ones (by that I mean the ones that did felonies and other crimes, besides being illegal immigrants). Expell those. The rest should have some path to legalization. It is a tough issue but it has to be handled. I do agree with charging them penalties and back taxes. I do not agree with them going to the front of the line ahead of the many that are waiting for answers in the legal process.
Go after the employers. I mean seriously go after, not just a raid or two of the 'migra', just done for show. Penalties of so-much per-person per day. After x number of days (say 30 or 60), jail time for the CEO or owner of the business. Once you apply the law, business will not be as incentivated (is that a word?) to hire illegals. Will that pose a problem for many businesses? Yes. But it will also force people to legalize. Legal immigration helps us all, US workers and immigrants alike.
As I said, before, we do need legal immigration to work the fields and factories. But once they come with some in with some kind of legal permit, they are not as easy to exploit. Now they are paid slave-worker salaries with no benefiits or time-off. They are always in fear of deportation. Remove the fear, remopve the exploitation. If you pay taxes, income and social security, no matter how little, you are protected and you are entitled to benefits and some security.
