Much like some Mexican tourist areas (and other countries as well). The difference (I'm not sure there is a difference but I do not know enough about Turkey to know one way or the other) is that in Mexican tourist areas they are calling you filthy names while they do it. They assume (usually correctly) that most tourists do not speak coloquial Spanish.
