I'm a bit confused about the kind of immersion you're referring to here: in the language and customs, or in the bacteria-infested river. :-)

I had to have a dozen shots before and treatments afterwards due to the bacteria in the water. I knew their native grammar rules better than they did, but I certainly learned to communicate much better by the time I left. I enjoyed it though. :o) There were other 'immersion' experiences, but I have the fondest memories of that one.
