2.4GHz is one of the (older) unlicensed bands i.e. neither equipment makers nor end users have to bother with getting FCC licenses to run the products. It was so popular makers of lots of different types of equipment took advantage of it.

Apparently some microwave ovens can also cause interference on the 2.4GHz band - something to think about in a restaurant. Probably not a good idea to have one too close to the wireless access point/router.
