I'm sure it varies by breed. We have a book about labs that seems pretty good. It says they don't necessarily have full control over their bowels until somewhere between 6 months and 2 years of age, which is why they shouldn't be punished when they go somewhere you don't want them to. It says just get them outside as quickly as possible and praise them when they DO go where you want them to. Also, it goes without saying, proactively take them outside at likely times such as when they get up or after meals.

To make things even more entertaining in my house, the older dog has regressed and is now using the house as her bathroom as well. I have heard about this happening -- a new pet arrives and all the existing ones go nuts.

This too shall pass....
