Try cleaning the optical reader thiny on it with some alochol. I assume the thing reads CD's as well as DVD's. After you try cleaning it, if it still doesnt work try burning a CD. Generally the DVD and CD burning uses different laser beams - so its possible that one of the lasers is shot. I had this problem with a Toshiba laptop once and got it working again by cleaning it....so I'd surely give that a try.
