I've done both,
In the earlier days, I went to the Advisor conferences because the company paid the bill and it was usually in Miami, Palm Springs, or some other posh resort area. But lately, I have really gotten to apperciate the more regional (whilfest, sw fox) conferences especially since the advisor ones became less Fox focused. SW Fox is very affordable though, so even if you have to foot it yourself, it worth attending.
