Sorry in advance for spelling errors.....
MIU (Maharieshi International University) - makes the town VERY different from what you expect in the heartland.
The town was a major center for Transcendental Meditation. There were, IIRC, several hundred people who went to the "domes" twice a day to meditate and a couple of thousand who were there specifically for the university. The local access cable channel had about 4 hours a day devoted to Sat-Sang and meditation.
When I first arrived I drove around the town square. There was a Chineese restaurant (I found out it was a chain in lots of small cities so no big thing). There was also a Greek restaurant, an Indian restaurant, a Japanese noodle shop, a Thai vegetarian restaurant, an organic health food store/supermarket, Zeydie's bagels (not a chain - but someone who knows what zeydie means), and a fallafal house.
When I finished my tour of the square I went looking for Toto, because I sure wasn't in Iowa any more.
