I'm 'sort of' with you on this Tamar. The problem though as I see it is that affirmative action as originally envisioned is a bit like Utopia. Admirable, but maybe not all that practical. It assumes the ability to give an unlimited number of students a place. Of course, that's not the case. If we had enough spots for everybody, then I think it would be a great thing to accept people who may not have shown, from a purely objective standpoint, that they deserve the slot, but there is a certain unfairness created when hardworking qualified students are bumped out in order to take a chance on somebody on spec. If it works out well, then maybe an argument can be made, but if not, then it's just a waste of a space that could easily not have been wasted.

I certainly don't have the answer, but I'm not convinced that affirmative action in the way it's set up now (ie - one's in, one's out) is it. There has to be a way to accomodate both sets of needs (the qualified people need an education too), but I really don't know what it might be.
