Short-sight (myopia) is where you CAN read things close up but can't see, say, people in the same room very well.
Far- (or as we say, long-) sightedness (hypermatropis) is where you can see most stuff OK but need glasses for reading.
You've got, by the sounds of it, old-sight (presbyopia) where the iris can't faqccommodate so well anymore, giving symptoms of both.
