Because you can't assign a value to a field with [=] you must REPLACE it.
This should work
IF cse_closed = "CLOSED"$UPPER(currentCaseStatus)
...
This sholld also:
lbTest = (cse_closed = "CLOSED"$UPPER(currentCaseStatus))
And this:
REPLACE cse_closed WITH "CLOSED"$UPPER(currentCaseStatus)
