That's why I included "rule". To me that's a long ruler.

Well if you're talking of measuring something that's longer than a yard then a yardstick would be no good, by that reasoning. I don't know about the US but, by deft use of the hand and wrist, I can maintain rigidity in mine even if its extends over 4" long (phnar! phnar! :-)
