Regardless I appreciate discussing this very topic with you. I agree with you that most companies are doing SP-centric systems. I am convinced that people are often using SPs incorrectly. Like that college professor I keep mentioning. He only uses SPs for everything but still managed to make things unbearably slow for the users. SPs are not the "only" solution and not always the "best" solution. They should be used judiciously. Ad-hoc queries are also not the only solution, nor always the best solution. They too should be used judiciously.

Mike, even though we don't seem to agree on 'everything', I certainly appreciate talking to you as well. I can accept the fact that some will have concerns about SPs. I don't deny for one moment that developers abuse SPs, don't take into account isolation levels and locking, and wind up doing more damage. The story of the professor you mentioned is sad to hear, but it certainly not unique.

Conversely, I've seen situations where developers used remote views so badly that they were difficult to maintain. However, it was an issue of the developer(s), not the technology. Certainly, many criticisms of stored procs are rooted in bad experiences where people used them poorly, but it's important (as always) to weed that stuff out of the discussions.
