I saw the 1st two of them, but haven't seen the others. Not a bad show and it did keep my interest.
As for HBO series right now - I'll stick with Big Love.

>I missed the premiere, coming as it did right after the finale of "The Sopranos". Big shoes to fill. A few days later a coworker whose taste I respect said he liked it and so I checked it out. Allie and I have been hooked on it ever since.

>I will say right up front it isn't everyone's cup of tea. David Milch, the series creator, previously the creator of "NYPD Blue" and "Deadwood", can be a bit writerly and a bit out there. But when he's on, wow.

>Here is the basic setup. Three of the main characters are Mitch, Butch, and Shaun Yost, three generations of a legendary Southern California surfing family. (The credits sequence, which is about the best I have ever seen, may make you want to run out and buy a surfboard and move to Southern California). The name star is Rebecca DeMornay as grandma Sissy. She has that leathery SoCal hanging-onto-youth look and a personality to match. Various character actors from "Deadwood" are also on hand.

>The title character, John, is played by a relative unknown. He is a mysterious figure to say the least. Not quite of this world. That he might be from Cincinnati -- which comes from a stray comment by Butchie, who is not exactly a pillar of accuracy -- is IMO a comic aside.
>
>Check it out if you have a chance. I will be interested in other views. Unlike "The Sopranos", this is not a slam dunk. But I keep finding it compelling.
