There is this marvellous device, "IntrayPalp" that we use. It's like a sort of filled rubber glove but slim enough to fit in the paper tray of most printers. The "fingers" palpitate the paper to judge the thickness and quality and on board light-sensitive gizmos can read the manuf's watermark. Accurate in 80% of brands so the blurb goes.
