It was called a submarine sandwich (sub for short) for a long time before Subway was born. Somebody had the very bright idea of re-using the "sub" to link it to a very well known piece of Americana. For those non-Americans (and those few Americans) who have never been in one.........a Subway franchise shop is decorated with maps of the New York City subway system. When they first came out I was checking them for the stations I used to get to work, Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium, etc. A great marketing idea.
