Use
vartype(myVar)<>'U'
Or use
type('MyVar') <> 'U'
for more complex cases, say, type('_screen.ActiveForm.name') = 'C' or type('myArr[1]') <> 'U' to check array's existance.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
