Having spent almost a week reinstalling practically every application in my PC (Windows restore failed), we are shopping for a comprehensive affordable backup system that takes care of this. So far we are considering Symantec Backup Exec and Symantec Ghost. Would anyone comment about these, as well as other alternatives, please?

The goal is to set things up so backups are made automatically (daily?) to a separate machine in LAN, from where we would take weekly copies to another site. This is not so much about a backup system for data and development folders, but System backup.
