Kevin, are you working from the room? I've found that sometimes it pays to get away from the customer and focus on the job at hand, which means one of the "suite" hotels works really well. Springhill Suites was great and I stayed in an Amerisuite in July; the chain has just been bought by Hyatt(?) and it's being totally revamped.
As for smell- the worst smell I ever had was in the Hilton at Los Angeles airport. It was immediately after that big power cut a few years back; I was on the first West Coast flight out of "black hold of calcutta" JFK airport where I'd spent many happy hours. I didn't care about the smell... a shower and lunch was heaven after the dark-with-no-running-water scenario at JFK. I don't think I'll ever forget the joys of navigating (literally) the JFK restrooms twelve hours after the power cut started.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
