There were other quirks with the connection later. After a while the two Vista machines lost any web connection except port 80 - that one worked, but Skype, email, and yes, terminal services were gone. It may be the wireless provider for the hotel (StayOnline.com) has set the router to recognize the MAC addresses and just label us as too demanding at various times. Vista probably detected some status change, because no matter what I did, the connection now looked like "local only".
So we wasted a lot of time with it, but then saved even more with what we were able to do when it worked. All in all, I wish there was a setting for "heavy users - do not disable" that the hotel guys could just click on.
