The monitor is distorted because you are using a resolution that is not designed for a wide screen monitor. Your widescreen is closer to 912x600.

If you have to use 800x600 you might want to consider getting a pair of glasses that are just for computer use. Then you may be able to work in a higher resolution.

You can also play with the themes to make things a bit easier to read.
