When I run the official (boot to DOS) Dell diagnostics with 512 meg, the diagnostics freeze up in progress rather than reporting an error. With less than 512 meg, I can't make it go wrong.

Sounds like you've tried a complete different pair to get 512 and got the failure?
Think I'd be tempted to boot up with one module then go to bios configuration and see if something looks hinky there. Sounds like there is a conflict between what bios thinks it should get in hardware and what it is getting and it doesn't know what to do with the balance.
